Chemical benzene could pose health hazard for humans and wildlife alike in Kalamazoo River oil spill

LANSING State environmental experts are advising the public to stay clear of a 15miles stretch of the Kalamazoo River contaminated by 840,000 gallons of crude oil from a ruptured pipeline Monday near Marshall.
Officials said Tuesday that high levels of benzene, a potentially harmful chemical released from the oil,Parajumpers Long Bear, could pose a health hazard to humans who come in contact with the water or breath in the fumes.
Wildlife experts also are warning the public not to handle wildlife coated with the oil,parajumpers ski wear, saying improper treatment could be harmful to the animals and humans.
They asking the public to report sightings of oilaffected animals by calling 18003066837 and providing their location.
Boating access sites along the Kalamazoo River, from Talmadge Creek, near Marshall, to Augusta also have been closed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
Mary Dettloff,Parajumpers midseason, a MDNRE spokeswoman, said Gov. Jennifer Granholm has ordered partial activation of the Michigan State Police State Emergency Operations Center in Lansing that pulls together highlevel officials from a variety of agencies to coordinate response. Fish and Wildlife Service also have personnel on site or en route.
Contractors are providing respirators for containment and cleanup workers that will allow them to safely operate in the area.

We not sure yet how long that will be. We are asking people to stay out of the water and away from the river. said the smell of benzene can be detected and it will burn the nose and lungs.

This is the second distribution pipeline that has ruptured in Michigan this year, Dettloff said. Over the Memorial Day weekend, a BPowned gasoline pipeline in St. Joseph County Constantine Township leaked 89,Parajumpers special edition,000 gallons of gasoline, causing the evacuation of several nearby homes and prompting well testing.
