Last day of school full of emotion The Free Press
There's about a minute to go before the bell rings and kids at Monroe Elementary in North Mankato are buzzing to get into their rooms. Voices are a little louder than usual. Locker doors slam with a little more gusto. Kids hurry into classrooms instead of dawdle. And through the crowd of first, second and thirdgraders, two arms in a blue and white striped polo shirt shoot straight into the air, index fingers pointing toward the heavens. "Just one more day!" a boy shouts to a buddy. The buddy raises his arms in highfive formation. "Yes!" they say together, then lug their backpacks into their lockers and trot into their room for one final day of second grade. There is no other feeling in the world quite like the last day of school. As long as you live you will never again feel the rush of finally getting to the end of the road, that day no one can give you homework or tell you there's a test tomorrow or warn you about those mysterious initials "MCAs" or "NWEAs." It is the brink of freedom, unbridled optimism, canada goose chateau parka, the day before a threemonth period that in the mind of a second or thirdgrader in the beginning of June on a day when the sun is blazing and the pools are open seems like forever: summer vacation. "I look at the end of the year as kind of bittersweet," says Sharon Fitch, moncler vest women, principal at Hoover Elementary. "It's freedom for the kids, but on the other hand, another year has passed, and parents look at the end of the year a little differently. You reflect on how much they've learned, especially the kindergartners. They've grown so much physically and academically." Fitch was a teacher before she got into management. And she remembers how difficult it was to say goodbye to kids who, for nine months, came to her for guidance and learning. "You're probably the most attached to kids you have to work the hardest with and bring them along," she said. "You really get attached." Down the hall from Fitch is teacher Becky Brudwick. She's been teaching for 18 years, moncler coats outlet, but rarely has she been as close to a group of students as she was this year. Demographic shifts forced the addition of another thirdgrade class at Hoover. Brudwick was offered the chance to have the same class for a second year. She said yes, but it was contingent on the parents approving it. All parents from her secondgrade class a year ago said yes. Every year on the last day of school, she said, it's hard to say goodbye. This year was harder. She expected that. "I'm the kind of teacher who is personal already, canada goose kids," she said. "I attend their games . and develop relationships with them and their parents." The students, who Brudwick says have become like a family and watch out for each other in the classroom as well as on the playground, came to school Thursday bearing gifts. Some brought flowers because they knew Mrs. Brudwick loved to garden. Others brought gift cards to her favorite restaurants. Student Carter Hemstock said his fortune has prompted a little jealousy from an older brother. "He thinks I'm kind of lucky and it's unfair that I got to have the same teacher two years in a row," he said. And student Kelsey Kopp, when asked what she'll miss most about third grade, quickly said "Having Mrs. Brudwick again." Personal connections are the way Kennedy Elementary Principal Greg Stoeffel runs things in his school or, rather, "ran" things. He's retiring. And in a scene that was about as American as mom and apple pie, canada goose mystique parka, the students, faculty and staff sent Stoeffel out in cowboy style. He walked through the students, slapped five to the hand of every kid in line. At the end of the line, a horse awaited. Stoeffel put his hands to his face and said, "What is going on here?" He mounted the horse and rode around the Kennedy campus for a few minutes. "I'm pretty sure he took horse lessons," a girl says to her friend. When he came down, he confessed ignorance to the whole plan. "It was a great surprise for me," he said. "I had no idea." Stoeffel, like Brudwick, bonds with the kids in his school. He eats lunch with every kid every year during group birthday lunches. "I'm very close to these students," he said. "I made a big effort to get to know them." And then the kids approached. A curlyhaired girl gives him a hug. A blond boy in a basketball shirt says, "Happy last day of school, Mr. Stoeffel." Another girl asks, "What was it like riding that horse?" And finally, a little girl in pigtails says, "I'll miss you," and opens her arms to hug him.
