an outdoor destination Knoxville News Sentinel
As school started back this week, I reflected on a wonderful summer with my family that included boat rides on Norris and Fort Loudoun lakes and weekend camping trips to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
It's one of the benefits of living in East Tennessee, canada goose nyc, and that was driven home again at this week's ribboncutting celebrating a new 15mile South Loop connecting more than 30 miles of urban trails.
Ed McAlister, moncler vest women, who started River Sports Outfitters nearly 30 years ago, nailed it when he told me, "It's about the community being the place to come to recreate, to work and to live. as a company or an individual and find a house for sale, maybe a job, but what do you do in your time off from work?
"This is, to me, the start for Knoxville," he added. "We've had some starts in the past, but I think they were fragmented. It wasn't that anybody was fighting, but everybody wasn't on the same train."
That unified effort aims to make Knoxville a hub for outdoor recreation and tourism, and McAlister will play an even greater role in making that happen as he brings in a new business partner, Bill Chandler, who will transition into coownership of River Sports.
While McAlister assured me he'll still be a fixture at River Sports helping customers (or family of outdoor community, canada goose expedition parka, as he called them), he will be freed up to spend more time working with organizations like Legacy Parks Foundation, canada goose trillium parka, coming up with outdoor recreation programs in Knoxville and organizing group adventures. (He recently returned from Mount Kilimanjaro with about eight Knoxvillians.) He also sits on the board of the Outdoor Industry Association and Grassroots Outdoor Alliance, whose fall buying show will be here for four years starting in 2013.
Knoxville was even featured in Backpacker magazine, thanks in part to McAlister, who played host to the editor for a week, taking him paddling, riding and walking every day: "I didn't ask, and on his own he put that blip in there. That's big."
For businesses, the potential is huge. "I don't think we've even touched the surface," he said, citing Chattanooga where The North Face and Patagonia have showrooms and company reps live in the area.
Meanwhile, restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores and a bar where you can have a beer after you ride are some businesses we might expect to grow up around a trail, said Carol Evans, executive director of the Legacy Parks Foundation.
River Sports does NOTHING for outdoor recreation in Knoxville. Getting exclusive contracts to provide rentals on city land does not constitute helping the outdoors. They rented bikes at Meads, but didn't have to decency to create a bikefriendly map for Ijams to use. I've never seen River Sports employees building trails, yet you see tons of FCP, bike zoo, and Cedar Bluff Cycles employees and owners out there every week. River Sports needs to step up and help out if they want to reap the rewards of everyone else's labor.
Almost every day on this site, one can read comments that just scream colossal ignorance and mindboggling insensitivity and shallowness. In fact, it is often hard to imagine that such commenters actually exist or that there could be a more ridiculous, selfdestructive comment. Then, bamthis commenter comes out with yet another one of his bitter, canada goose chateau parka, vitriolic partisan remarks aimed at those Knoxville citizens who are actually doing something to improve the city and its quality of life while he does nothing but engage in hateful smear campaignsa smear campaign that he continues to participate in against Mayor Rogero for purely spiteful, hateful political reasons.
Oddly, while Knoxville has been criticized over the past halfcentury for its ugliness, its ability to overcome that and regenerate itself has become one of its assets; the reasons that the South Knoxville woodlands escaped the gaze of those with strip mall mentalities have now played into the city's future hand. This isn't just about a bike trail here and a riverwalk there, but about an attempt to use an asset that we ignored for way too long.
Despite the efforts of a lot of hard working people, it is pathetic that this commenter wants to hold onto the ugliness and selfish behavior of years past.
I live in Atlanta now (grew up in Knoxville) and I am jealous. This is awesome! There arent too many cities that have these types of amenities so close the downtown area. For the people that say this wont create jobs, it probably wont directly create many jobs, but quality of life is the new gauge many consider when looking for a place to live. Companies go where people want to go and people want these types of options. There are many cities that would love to have all the unique outdoor recreation opportunities and beauty that Knoxville has.
